The USDA Organic Standard is a set of rules and regulations issued by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to define and control methods for producing, processing, and labeling organic agricultural products. It is one of the most prestigious and popular organic certifications in the world, applied not only to products consumed in the United States but also to have a wide influence on the global export market.

Definition of Organic Products According to the USDA

According to the USDA, organic products are those that are produced without the use of synthetic chemicals, pesticides, chemical fertilizers, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), growth regulators, artificial preservatives, or ionizing radiation. The production process must strictly comply with the principles of environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, and maintenance of natural ecological balance.

USDA Organic Standards Fundamentals

  • Planting soil: The soil must be cultivated organically for at least 3 years before harvesting the first product, without the use of banned chemicals.
  • Seeds and seedlings: Organic varieties are preferred. Do not use genetically modified (GMO) varieties.
  • Pest management: Prioritize biological, physical, mechanical measures instead of chemical.
  • Animal husbandry: Animals must be fed with organic feed, without the use of antibiotics, growth hormones; must have living conditions to ensure animal welfare and contact with the natural environment.
  • Processing and storage: Do not use additives, preservatives, synthetic flavorings or radiation treatment.
  • Labeling: Products are labeled “USDA Organic” only when they meet a minimum of 95% organic ingredients, the rest must be within the permitted category.

USDA Organic Certification Process

Units that produce, process, and distribute organic products must apply for certification with a USDA-accredited certification body. This process includes record checks, field inspections, traceability, and an assessment of compliance with the standard. Once satisfactory, the product will be allowed to use the “USDA Organic” label.
