Singapore Green Building Product Certification
Overview of Singapore Green Building Product Certification Scheme (SGBP)
The Singapore Green Building Product Certification Scheme (SGBP) is a certification program for construction products and materials with sustainable performance, managed by the Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC). Implemented to support green building projects in achieving Green Mark standards and other green building assessment systems, SGBP recognizes products that meet stringent environmental, health, and resource efficiency criteria.
History of establishment and development
The SGBP certification was established to meet the growing demand for environmentally friendly building materials and products in Singapore and the region. SGBC designed SGBP based on international standards, continuously updating it to support the construction industry’s transition to sustainable models. To date, SGBP has become one of the most prestigious green building product certification systems in Asia.
Meaning and Objectives of SGBP
- Evaluate and recognize building products that meet green, health-safe, and emission-reducing criteria.
- Encourage manufacturers to improve technology and production processes to increase sustainability.
- Support investors, architects, and contractors in selecting appropriate products to achieve green building certification.
- Promote Singapore as a pioneering country in sustainable construction.
Identification characteristics of SGBP
Products achieving SGBP certification are permitted to use SGBC’s “Singapore Green Building Product” logo on documentation, packaging, and tender documents. This helps stakeholders quickly identify and trust the quality and environmental performance of products.
Product evaluation criteria
The SGBP program establishes specific criteria systems for each group of building products, based on the following main aspects:
- Resource Efficiency: use of recycled/renewable raw materials, reducing exploitation of non-renewable resources.
- Emission Reduction: control and limitation of waste generation, VOCs, and toxic emissions.
- Energy and Water Efficiency: products that save energy/water in production and use.
- Durability and Lifecycle: design for extended lifespan, easy reuse or recycling at end of life.
- Health Safety: limiting or eliminating toxic chemicals, ensuring a healthy environment for users.
- Compliance with international and local environmental regulations.
Each product type (finishing materials, MEP systems, insulation materials, furniture, etc.) has its own criteria set reflecting industry specifics.
SGBP Registration and Certification Process
The SGBP certification process includes the following main steps:
- Registration: Enterprises submit applications, technical documents, evidence, and product samples to SGBC.
- Document Assessment: SGBC reviews completeness, validity, and classifies appropriate certification levels.
- Site Inspection (if required): Assessment at production facilities, collecting additional information.
- Product Testing: Send samples to SGBC-accredited laboratories for parameter testing.
- Detailed Evaluation: Compare results with SGBP criteria for each product group, scoring by grade (Certified, Good, Very Good, Excellent, Leader).
- Certification Issuance: After meeting requirements, SGBC issues SGBP certification with a 2-year validity period.
- Periodic Monitoring: Inspection and re-evaluation during renewal or when there are changes to products/processes.
Benefits of SGBP Certification
- Enhanced Brand Value: products are recognized as sustainable, improving corporate reputation.
- Access to Green Building Projects: supports achieving Green Mark points, expanding market reach.
- Innovation Encouragement: motivation to improve technology and production processes in a green direction.
- Meeting Market Trends: buyers and designers prioritize SGBP-certified products.
- Environmental and Community Health Protection: reducing emissions, limiting toxic chemicals.
SGBP in the international context and development trends
SGBP is designed by SGBC based on international standards and is recognized regionally, helping Singapore products (and products manufactured elsewhere but registered with SGBC) to access global markets smoothly. In the trend of green construction, SGBP standards continuously update criteria, expanding scope to many new material and equipment categories.
Challenges and opportunities in the application of SGBP
Achieving SGBP certification may require initial investment costs for testing and product improvement, as well as preparing system documentation (ISO 9001, ISO 45001, ISO 14067, or LCA). However, in the long term, SGBP provides competitive advantages, opportunities to participate in major projects, increased export potential, and contribution to sustainable development goals.
