About GPSR Standards

GPSR stands for “General Product Safety Requirements”. It is a set of legal standards or regulations intended to ensure that products placed on the market must meet the minimum requirements for consumer safety, avoiding endangering health or life under normal or reasonable conditions of foreseeable use.

Purpose and Meaning

The GPSR standard is designed to protect the rights and safety of consumers, and to enhance the responsibility of manufacturers, importers, and distributors for the products they provide to the market. GPSR compliance minimizes the risk of accidents, injuries, or negative health effects caused by unsafe use of the product.

The Basics of GPSR

  • General Safety Requirements: The product must be safe to use under normal or reasonably foreseeable conditions.
  • Responsibilities of stakeholders: Manufacturers, importers, distributors must ensure that products meet safety standards, inspect, monitor quality, and report potential risks if detected.
  • Assessment and inspection: Regularly inspect and evaluate products to detect potential risks early, recall products that do not meet safety requirements.
  • Information and labels: Products must have clear instructions for use, risk warnings (if any) and adequate labels, helping consumers to recognize and use them properly.

Scope of application

GPSR generally applies to most types of consumer products, except for some special cases that have separate safety regulations (such as pharmaceuticals, food, medical devices,…). In Europe, the GPSR standard is specified in Directive 2001/95/EC on general product safety, which is an important legal basis for controlling the quality of consumer goods on the market.

Impact on Businesses and Consumers

  • For businesses: GPSR compliance helps businesses build reputation, avoid legal risks, minimize the cost of recalling defective products and expand export markets.
  • For consumers: GPSR brings peace of mind when using products, contributing to improving the quality of life and protecting the interests of shoppers.

GPSR standards play a key role in ensuring product safety in the market, protecting public health and consumer rights. Businesses need to actively learn, update and comply with the requirements of GPSR for sustainable development and international integration. As the saying goes: “Prevention is better than cure”, ensuring product safety from the beginning will help businesses avoid many consequences later.
